expat group split

Moving to a new country as an expat or a digital nomad is an adventure filled with opportunities for personal and professional growth. However, one of the most significant challenges internationals face is building a social network in their new environment. In this guide, I share my favorite ways to help anyone meet people with ease by answering the following question:

What are the best ways to meet people in Split?

1. Join Expat communities:

First and foremost I am refering to Facebook groups. Unfortunately, there is nothing more official in the city yet, but I believe there is enough to get you going. In these groups you will often find social events, meetups, and gatherings tailored for digital nomads, expats and event international students, providing an excellent opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who understand the challenges of living abroad.

Here are a couple of that gather more members:

2. Attend Local Events:

Local events are always a good reason to organize a meet up. These gatherings also offer a chance to meet locals who share an interest in exploring the city's cultural offerings. Whether it's a sports event, street fair, art exhibition, or a food festival, local events provide a vibrant backdrop for making new friends and experiencing the richness of your new surroundings.

3. Take Classes or Workshops:

I wrote an article about best courses and classes in Split which is also a great way to meet people with similar interests. These structured activities provide a natural setting for building connections and sparking conversations. Whether you're brushing up on your language skills, learning to cook local cuisine, or indulging in a favorite hobby, classes and workshops offer a fun and interactive way to meet new people while expanding your skill set.

4. Volunteer in Split:

Get involved in volunteer opportunities or community service projects. Not only does volunteering allow you to give back to the community, but it also introduces you to a diverse group of individuals who share a passion for making a difference. Whether you're tutoring children, helping out at a local shelter, or participating in environmental clean-up efforts, volunteering offers a rewarding way to meet people while contributing to the greater good.

5. Utilize Dating Apps:

Dating apps are popular in Croatia as anywhere else. Pick you favorite one and explore options to meet new people. As you know, these platforms offer a virtual space to connect with others, organize drinks or even a date in your area. Whether you're looking for a firend or seeking your soulmate, dating apps provide a convenient way to expand your social circle.

6. Attend Networking Events:

Keep an eye out for networking events, industry conferences, and professional meetups relevant to your field. Engaging with professionals in your industry can lead to valuable connections and potential career opportunities. Whether you're attending a business conference, industry mixer, or professional development workshop, networking events offer a platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and forge new professional relationships.

7. Join Sports or Fitness Clubs:

Participate in sports leagues, fitness classes, or outdoor activities that interest you. Whether it's joining a local soccer team, attending yoga classes, or exploring hiking trails in the countryside, sports and fitness clubs provide a fun and healthy way to meet new people while staying active and fit. Engaging in physical activities not only promotes overall well-being but also fosters camaraderie and teamwork among participants, making it easier to form lasting friendships.

8. Attend Expat Meetup Events:

Keep an eye out for expat meetup events organized by expat communities, local businesses, or expat-friendly establishments. These events often feature social gatherings, happy hours, and cultural exchanges specifically geared towards expatriates. Whether it's a casual coffee meetup, themed dinner party, or language exchange event, expat meetups offer a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for meeting new people and connecting with fellow expats in your new city.

Currently, only one expat group is gathering each Wednesday morning for a coffee in Cafe Bar Tenis. Join them here. Remember, there is always a possibility for you to organize something through Meetup.com or directly on Facebook.

By following these ten strategies and actively engaging with your surroundings, you'll have a greater chance of meeting new people and building a supportive network as an expatriate in your new home. I hope you will embrace the adventure, step out of your comfort zone, and seize every opportunity to connect with others – you never know where your next friendship may lead!
